Spousal Support Options

Previously called alimony, spousal support is monetary compensation ordered by the court in some cases after a couple separates. Sometimes support only consists of temporary alimony, meant to get the lower-earning spouse back on their feet. It can also last up to one half of the time you were married, up to a 10-year marriage.

Support Implications

If you have been married for at least 10 years, you may have a possibility of either paying or receiving permanent alimony for the rest of your life. Also, it is likely for the supporting ex-spouse to pay for the legal fees of the spouse who receives support.

That is why you need an experienced certified family law specialist to represent your best interests in court. Lawyer Tamera Trindade, serving Redding and the entire Shasta County area, provides skilled and detailed representation in your divorce case.

How Support Can Stop

There are some situations after a divorce settlement that allow for a modification of spousal maintenance. They happen if the supported spouse:

  • Lives with someone in a cohabitating relationship or gets married
  • Refuses to get a job
  • Is financially independent
